My New Years Resolution
So, I may have spoke to you about this, and if so I apologize for the repetition, but I’m actually and truly excited about this.
Since I have a pretty severe guilt, for reasons I care not to go in to, over being a poor supporter of music over the past few years I decided to change that, and this is how:
For the entire year of 2012 I have decided to buy a record a week to give back to the people who inspire me and keep me going. And believe me, this isn’t a completely righteous quest, I’ve been getting more serious about record collecting recently, so in theory I will hopefully have expanded my collection by 52 new records by the end of the year. That makes me really happy.
So as you probably already saw, the inaugural record in this selfish endeavor is none other then the reissue of the Brand New album Your Favorite Weapon. I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of the extremely rare clear vinyl when I spent New Years with them in Atlantic City. The remaster sounds amazing and it hasn’t left my deck since I put it on the first time. You should come over and hear it sometime.
Anyway, this is fun for me, and if it’s fun for you keep up with me here, I already got next weeks all lined up and it’s one of my favorite records from last year.
Record Challenge Week 2: Kevin Devine - Between the Concrete & Clouds
I actually got the chance to see Kevin play when he was in town last week, for the first time in fact. He was all alone, and all the better. He sounded magnificent. Not one bad note sung and he is just so naturally talented with his guitar. I was really hesitant getting into this album at first, but the more I listened to it the more I grew to like it, so naturally I decided to pick it up at the show. I bought it right from him in fact, we exchanged a few words and laughs, it was great. Such a polite and warm personality to be around. Check this album out if you haven’t, it kind of fell under the radar, but I think it’s great, definitely top ten of 2011 material.
Some of my favorite tracks from the album are off-Screen, Sleepwalking Through My Life, 11-17, and I used to Be Someone.
And if you get a chance to see Kevin, please don’t wait as long as I did to do so, he’s the real thing.
Record Challenge Week 3: Feist - Metals
First off; one of my favorite things about a record is how much detail I (normally) overlook when seeing that silly tiny album cover in iTunes/Spotify. Then I hold this in my hand and realize I’m holding a piece of art, physically, and soon hearing one. “Such subtlety, so easily missed!” is a lyric that pops right into my head, and is a reoccurring theme with most records that I pick up. From the overall earthy artwork, down to this particular dark marbled vinyl pressing, it’s glorious.
This record is EASILY in my top 3 or 4 from last year, and was a challenge for me upon first listen. I am stubborn, I wanted the simplicity and harrowing beauty of Let It Die but with the noticeable vocal growth shown in The Reminder. What she did with this album was so far and beyond all of that, it was an overall musical evolution, and frankly it surpassed my ear and made it difficult for me to swallow at first, but grew more and more on me with each listen.
Every song on this record is extraordinary (I could do without A Commotion though). The opening track The Bad in Each Other really sets the tone for an intricate record full of surprise. A few of my favorites are the opening track, How Come You Never Go There, Bittersweet Melodies, and Get It Wrong Get It Right.
I’m sure you’ve already heard this, but if you haven’t please do, it’ll make you feel beautiful. Perfect Sunday morning listening.
